Getting Down To Frizzness: Monica!

SO I saw this little lady on Facebook, & I adored her hair! And she has the sweetest personality to boot...gorgeous inside & out! Meet Monica, a curlie cutie destined for to inspire us all!

Tell us about you: I am a senior in college studying Sociology & I am fascinated by natural hair, it is absolutely gorgeous!

How long have you been rocking your frizzness? I have been natural for three years but I just now started wearing it curly and I have been doing that for about three months and I LOVE IT.

Did you desire a second date following your BC/End of transition, or did you make reservations for a party of ONE? That wasn’t a problem because I wore sew ins for a year while I was transitioning.

Natural Hair doesn't define who you are BUT.....it shows the versatility you can do with your hair. There are so many unique styles that naturals can rock and look hot! Natural hair is unpredictable but it gives you a chance to play with your hair and come up with great styles.

What was the moment of epiphany in your journey? I had no idea what to do with my curly hair so I panicked and thought that I needed to straighten it to deal with it and get a desired look. Boy was I wrong!

Because natural manes are so unpredictable, how do you combat feeling defeated on days when your crown seems less than stellar (based your OWN criteria)? Sometimes it gets tough, but I wouldn’t change it for the world. When I am having problems with my hair, I will do a wash n’ go and I am usually fine.

Do random people attempt to lay hands in your mane? No, it’s people that I know.

Do you find your mane becoming the grand topic of conversation? No, most people that I know are not natural so it doesn’t come up much at all. People will ask me questions about it but we don't talk about hair the whole time.

CONFIDENCE CHECK: Has natural hair allowed you to dance as if no one is watching, or has your aurora remain unfazed since your relaxed days? Yes, I feel free and I love it. It’s nice to be able to wear your hair in its natural state.

Share some secrets leading to a fabulous, happy, HEALTHY mane...promise we WILL tell! I try to keep my hair moisturized and my ends trimmed! Hair needs moisture, moisture, moisture! I try to use as many organic products that I can without hurting my wallet.

What was the WORST mistake you’ve made along the way? Probably buying super expensive products and straightening my hair so much.

What advice can you bless new, transitioning or frustrated kinky curly queens with? Don’t give up, rock your curls because they are beautiful. I would go easy on the heat, don’t think you have to straighten your hair every time you wash it because you can wear your hair curly and wear tons of unique hairstyles!

What natural experiments put the glam in your crown? Which ones ended up filed under Campaign EPIC FAIL? I finally had a successful twist out and I was super pleased!! I tried to a bantu knot out on dry hair and it didn’t work for me. I have to do my hairstyles with wet or damp hair. I still rocked the hair do but it wasn’t as nice as I have seen others with the bantu knots! I will keep experimenting and learning.

What's the most fabulous part of your journey to frizzness? I just love to experiment with it and learn how to take care of my hair. I’m just learning how to take care of natural hair, what a shame! It’s been a fun and frustrating journey!

Outside of your gorgeous mane, what inspires you? Friends, positive energy, family, poetry/writing and mustic!

How can our beautiful readers find you on the web? My email is montyme@hotmail.com or you can find me on facebook- Monica Winehouse

Many thanks & blessings for getting down to frizzness!

Icky, Sticky - Bouncy.....HANGTIME!

Hey, Sugarlumps! It's going to be a fantastic week, yes? Say it with me: YES!

Ok, I don't know if any of you ever feel this way, but sometimes I think my curls are a bit....weird. They like to just spiral out everywhere & most of the time stick straight up in the air. Maybe they're trying to reach The Upper Room? I dunno. But since I'm kinda off-beat & never quite fit in, I think the eclectic-ness of my crown works quite nicely for me.

Last week, coming off a wash-n-go, I had to give my frizz that "don't start none -won't be none" triple death glare. My coils do not like air drying at top soak; damp styling suits me best. But since I was so lame, I tried wearing a bag over my coils to lock the moisture in so I could finally race to the end to my yellow brick road: bouncy coils. Mmm hmmm. Now I'm giving away my age here, but if any of you has ever seen Tom Hanks in "Turner & Hooch" (the ginormous dog slanging slob everywhere), then you'll know that when I took that bag off & shook my mane....H20/product flew every-somewhere! LAME. (I had to quick dry my hair with a tee-shirt & skedaddle to work).

Anyhoo, no matter what I put in my hair for a WNG, it always dries stiff, crunchy & DRY. Maybe I haven't found the right combo or technique, but it's NOT working. At the end of last Monday, I sprinted for my S-Curl Activating Moisturizer, slapping it on with Kimble Bounce Back Curl & a spritz of water. My curls were refreshed, even forgiving me for frying them in the heat while we opened for the Midnight Star concert last weekend. I didn't have to touch my hair for the rest of the week - save for putting it up in a puff & taking it down. I enjoyed the low maintenance of it all.

By last Thursday I had a big decision to make in lieu of a wedding I was attending Saturday. Rock the ever growing fro I'd obtained (which still looked healthy & defined) or start fresh with a style that has defied me every since I went natural: a braidout. Braidouts were my staple during the 17 month transition. Now, the perfection of them eludes me. What the hey: I like living on the edge sometimes so I gave it a go using the S-Curl & pairing it with Herbal Essences Set Me Up Gel. I'm hard-core like that! And the next day for braid takedown.....

Whomp, whomp, whomp. Sticky, icky uugghhh. I was mortified. My curls looked great & had more bounce to the ounce, but-er-ah: yuck. For real. I had to go to work like that. But then the clouds opened & a miracle was delivered my way as the day waned on: my coils dried into touchable, bouncy hair - with a little HANGTIME to boot! (Minimal, but not invisible). Woo hoo!!!! I am loving it! It looked even better Saturday & today it still rocks on! Shiny, full of vibrancy...I am so pleased. I'll try this again because low maintenance is my bff for life!

So one of the pictures attached are from the wedding. The flower is courtesy of Mom, who decided along with my Hubbs & our dance daughter that the small one I had on kicked rocks so they replaced it with the one in the pictures. Yep, I kind of dug it. The next pictures are my fro-tastic day 4! I'll keep you posted on my progress - currently on Day #5, keeping curls alive! If I make it to this weekend without saturating/restyling, I may never let another product touch my non-tender head....until my next purchase, lol!

Getting Down To Frizzness: Curly Chronicles!

Great Monday, Curlies....I pray your week will be a blessed & INSPIRED one!

Today, I'm completely stoked to bring to you some curly wisdom via Autumn, the stunning You Tube phenom behind the Curly Chronicles & The Retro Natural Blog! I am so honored she took the time to share her story wth us....just look her fantabulous style & you'll see why I'm locked on my happy pudding-face smile today! Swoon!

How long have you been rocking your frizzness?I’ve been a proud frizzhead since 2003 ..although in highschool, I definitely had my poofy, frizzy moments :)

Did you desire a second date following your BC/End of transition, or did you make reservations for a party of ONE?RSVP for one, I didn’t transition but I didn’t have a perm, my hair was just really damaged by heat and color so I starting cutting at it and lopped off about 4 inches which left me with maybe 3 to 4 inches.

Natural Hair doesn't define who you are BUT.....It’s made a huge difference in how I view myself and how much confidence I have.

What was your natural epiphany moment? I was standing in the mirror frustrated with my purple dyed hair that barely went past my shoulders. It was thin, stringy and dry. I couldn’t be happy with it straight and so I said “let’s take a step back and leave the hair alone for a little while.”

Because natural manes are so unpredictable, how do you combat feeling defeated on days when your crown seems less than stellar (based your OWN criteria)?I tend to accessorize when my hair’s being a bit “special”. It’s easier to toss on a bow, snood, or fascinator when your hair’s not looking how you’d like it to. Updo’s are easy as well and they easily mask that hair that’s desperate for a washing!

Do random people attempt to lay hands in your mane?Very rarely, but I think it’s because I don’t wear my hair down much, it’s normally pinned up in a retro style. I use to get a hand here and a hand there roaming hahaha but not so much anymore..I’m happy about that, I like having my space.

Do you find your mane becoming the grand topic of conversation? Not as much anymore but it used to be..I think, again, it has to deal with the fact that I don’t wear it out much. If I wear it down, I’m certain that it’ll be a topic..but a fun one! I never mind talking about hair and makeup :)

CONFIDENCE CHECK: Has natural hair allowed you to dance as if no one is watching, or has your aurora remain unfazed since your relaxed days?I’ve always danced like no one was watching but the only difference now is that I can actually whip my hair back n forth a little bit better! ;)

Share some secrets leading to a fabulous, happy, HEALTHY mane...promise we WILL tell!
Hmmm, I don’t think I really have any secrets, I don’t do anything truly special outside of deep conditioning treatments and scalp massages here and there (I should do them more often though!)

What was the WORST mistake you’ve made along the way?I think I’d have to say blow drying my hair too often and applying too much high heat, that showed the most damage!

What advice can you bless new, transitioning or frustrated kinky curly queens with?Be still for a moment and think about what your want your hair to look like but be realistic about it. Think about the biggest problem you’ve always had with your hair (dryness, shedding, too thin) because you may find yourself encountering these problems while natural as well as you wanna make sure you know what to do to combat them! Try to understand right off the bat that there’s no such thing as an effortless journey. It takes time, dedication, practice, and an optimistic attitude. You don’t excel at anything when you’re drowning yourself in negativity so try your best to have fun and don’t get mad when your hair doesn’t do what you want it to, try another method and if it just doesn’t work, you gotta accept it and move right on along.

What natural experiments put the glam in your crown? Which ones ended up filed under Campaign EPIC FAIL?Mixing coconut oil and leave in conditioner was fabulous, when I first figured that out, I was so happy…so was my hair! An epic fail was mixing Kinky Curly Curling Custard with ..I think it was Giovanni Direct Leave In conditioner. I think that was the combination from hell, white specs – everywhere! Oh the horror!

What's the most fabulous part of your journey to frizzness?Bearing the fruits of my labor! I have so much fun styling my hair. I could NOT say this was true before I decided to wear it natural. The hard work has paid off though and it’s nice to see the progress. I absolutely adore my hair and even when I don’t want to deal with it, I love it.

Outside of your gorgeous mane, what inspires you?The arts (really dancing and classical music), the pursuit of happiness, nature, my beloved, and I’m always inspired by animals, I have a great connection with them!

Kid's Frizz: Amiyah!

If you are a sucker for the cutest, most adorable, wanna-put-them-in-your-pocket munchkins, STOP READING NOW, lol! I'm so happy to introduce our first kid's feature: the little princess in our life, Amiyah - who happens to be the cute rugrat of my niecy-pooh! WARNING: you may involuntarily attempt to jump through your monitor to snatch a pinch of those dimples!!!!

Your name/Your child’s name:
Amiyah Nobles

How old is your little curly?1yr 9mos

Has she maintained the same texture up to this point?Yes she has

Would you liken her curly crown's behavior to The Little Rascals (her mane loves doing its OWN thing!) or The Rugrats (mischievous, but overall well-behaved)?Lol, I'm going to have to go with the Rugrats

Realistically, how much time will your little curly girl devote to letting you conduct a styling session before she's just over it?When she knows she is about to get her hair done, she comes and stand between my legs with no hesitation. Now, depending on her mood (if she is full or has her cookies) you may be able to get two ponytails instead of one. Overall... you have about 5 mins to do what you have to do before she changes her mind.

How often do you style?Everyday. If I don't, she will not be a happy camper because her hair curls around the ponytail which seems kind of painful to unravel.

What tools/products do you find breathes joy into your little one's curlies?I use Creme of Nature to wash her hair, Castor Oil Hair Treatment w/ Mink Oil, Hawaiian Silky 14&1, water and sometimes a little gel on her edges to keep her hair from curling up.

Whose hair takes longer: yours or your little one's?It takes me longer because even though I am not natural... I do not perm my hair every month and my hair becomes stubborn for me to style.

Sometimes our natural hair can act like David to Goliath. How do you conquer the pitfalls of bad products, styling tools and such to maintain great, healthy hair?Well, because she is a child and her hair is so much longer to actually style, I am still learning what makes her curls mad and what makes them happy. If her curls are not happy... she's not happy and neither am I. I haven't (yet) used a product that her hair did not agree with. But I do know if it is not kept wet while styling, get ready for an attitude. Ask me this question again next year... I know I will have a LONG list of things. LOL

With all the various media images around to put a twinkle in impressionable kid's adoring eyes, how do/can you encourage your little beauty to love her hair and who she is overall? When she gets older I would tell her how beautiful she is and that she shouldn't have to change herself for the likes of someone else or to be "popular."

Will you allow her to relax her hair while she's under your watchful eye? If so, at what age? When she is 18, she can do whatever she wants. Before that, I vowed to never perm her hair because 1) her hair doesn't need it 2) I remember the pains of getting a perm when I was younger 3) Every since I saw Good Hair (insert frightened look here), I now know the real dangers of putting chemicals in a child's hair before their hair follicules mature.

What would you like to leave the readers of The Frizzness with?Dealing w/ kids & natural hair can be very frustrating. A good tip is if you have a child that is not a big fan of getting their hair done or staying still... wait til they fall asleep! Gives you a chance to put a million ponytails in or braids which keeps the hair detangled if you have a child with very tight curls.

Give your babe a hug & a smooch from us....thank you for Getting Down to Frizzness!!!!

Frizz Review: Shea Moisture Curl & Style Conditioning Milk!

Great day, my little coilies!

In a none too rare moment of transparency, I must confess: I am a cheater.

Let me just say the words underscoring the following diatribe are not meant to hurt, harm or simply spite my current, most adoring betrothed: Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie. In fact, I can say with the utmost confidence that my heart and the impeccable styler are blissfully joined together in the billows of my adoration. The smoothie has never done me dirty, & plays extremely well with other products on the landscape of my mane. The times we've shared....TEAR.

But my heart is slowly beckoning another. And shamefacedly I admit....it's a close RELATIVE of the smoothie! Oh, the embarrassment of it all as guilt seems to escape my product consciousness!

My frizzies have fallen love at first style with Shea Moisture's Curl & Style Conditioning Milk! Wearing the same economical cost of $9.99 as the rest of the Shea Moisture family tree, this styler is the Frizz! Clean, fruity scent that's not too overwhelming. Lightweight, with the consistency of a lotion (although Lead-handed curlies beware!), & a shine out of this natural u-verse! My utmost goal is maintaining healthy, responsible curls & The Curl/Style Milk helps me maintain law & order in my frizzy playground. Each use has left my hair smooth, conditioned and moisturized. I've experimented using it with castor oil and Pantene's Curly Spray Gel, resulting in shiny spirals dancing across my crown. My coils are very unruly, but this combination keeps them rocking organized confusion. Just the way I like it!

I'm not into the whole hair typing thing, but I'd love to see what this product does for various types of hair. So if you've used this product, please dish! My curls are pretty easy to pop, but keeping them from frizzing out is a whole notha-notha! Would I purchase again? Yes, indeedy! Who am I to discourage curly love?

Getting Down To Frizzness: GG of The Write Curl Diary!

Great Monday, Gorgeous Ladies! I pray your weekend was a blessed one; mine was so great, my frizzies had to wear shade!

I am really stoked to drop this week's Web-Celeb guest feature in your laps! This little lady exudes such positive energy, you cannot help but smile when you read her work. She managed to successfully execute a ridiculously long transition that not only inspired me to kick off my own journey, but she birthed an insanely beautiful & healthy crown of hair in the process. Her advice is sound and easily relatable - which is such a plus for naturals who are just starting out. She's a gifted writer, talented multi-tasker & a great mommy to boot! She's GG of The Write Curl Diary & Peace, Love & Pretty Things!

How long have you been rocking your frizzness?
I got my last relaxer back in Spring of 2006. Then I transitioned for about three years. I’ve officially been rocking all natural hair for about two years now.

Did you desire a second date following your BC/End of transition, or did you make reservations for a party of ONE? Party of one. I never even considered looking back.

Natural Hair doesn't define who you are BUT..... it definitely says a lot about my personality. My intention in life is to always feel free and expressive, multi-faceted and unpredictable. My natural hair is all of those things.

What was the moment of epiphany in your journey? When I first decided to stop relaxing, I never intended to stop straightening my hair. Then one day, I decided to try a wash and go. I felt liberated and yet uncomfortable that day. I wasn’t used to wearing my hair in its natural state like that. I’d been conditioned that wearing my hair like that was unkempt, so I felt like people were looking at me funny, you know? But I soon realized that was all in my head. And that realization opened so many doors that had been closed in my mind.

Because natural manes are so unpredictable, how do you combat feeling defeated on days when your crown seems less than stellar (based your OWN criteria)? It comes with the territory. You are going to have awesome hair days where you want to go everywhere and see everyone! Then you are going to have days where your hair seems to be on a mission to defy what you want it to do. I love being able to put my hair in a bun. If all else fails, I can always pull off that style. And now that my hair is natural, my buns are fuller and more unique looking than they were when I was relaxed.

Do random people attempt to lay hands in your mane? Nope, I’ve never had that happen.

Do you find your mane becoming the grand topic of conversation? Sometimes. Nowadays, so many women are going natural and/or taking a more DIY approach to hair care. I love to talk about hair, so sometimes when someone simply asks me how I did my hair that day, I’ll go off on a tangent and probably give them way more information than they really wanted. So, I’ll try to give brief answers and let them probe if they want to get into the nitty gritty details. 

CONFIDENCE CHECK: Has natural hair allowed you to dance as if no one is watching, or has your aurora remain unfazed since your relaxed days? Having natural hair is definitely affected my confidence and my sense of freedom. My journey to natural occurred during a time where I was transitioning in other areas of my life as well. So, in my mind, my hair is symbolic of a shift in my perspective on life and my purpose in it. I don’t doubt myself as much as I used to, and I feel more in touch with my creativity and my unique point of view.

Share some secrets leading to a fabulous, happy, HEALTHY mane...promise we WILL tell! Everyone’s hair is different! But, here are some tips that I swear by:

-Pre-poo with oil/Oil Rinsing: If you have a hard time detangling your hair on wash day, and you’ve never tried pre-pooing with oil – you must try it! My favorite oils for this are coconut oil, EVOO and castor oil. I like to saturate my hair overnight in one of these oils and then wash my hair in the morning. I can tell a major difference when I skip this step! Another option is to wash your hair, then do an oil rinse before you condition. To oil rinse, I simply saturate my hair and scalp with oil after the shampoo step, then I rinse and continue with conditioning.

-Stretch your ends: My hair is fine and extremely and annoyingly prone to single strand knots! As much as possible, I try to keep my hair in styles where my ends are stretched. For me, this means that I put a roller on my ends when I’m setting my hair in twists or braids. In the winter, I’ll blowdry my hair about once a month (on low setting) to stretch my hair. I keep wash and gos to a minimum.

-Protective/Low Maintenance Styling: I started noticing much more length retention when I decreased the amount of time I spent with my hair out. For my hair to retain length, I simply can’t wear it down everyday like I used to. I’m currently shooting for waist-length hair by the end of this year. To accomplish that goal, I wear my hair in protective styles, mainly buns and updos at least 4-5 days a week and I wear it down mainly on weekends. There are some weeks where I wear it up for all 7 days. The less time I spend messing with it, detangling it, styling it – the better.

What was the WORST mistake you’ve made along the way? The worse mistake I’ve made is thinking that I could treat my hair any kind of way and it would still retain length and be healthy. I really thought that since my hair was sans chemicals, that it would be super strong and resilient and I wouldn’t have to worry about heat, tangles, deep conditioning, etc. I could not have been more wrong. Natural, textured, curly and kinky hair all have their own weaknesses that you have to be aware of and manage such as single strand knots, dryness/porosity issues, protein balance, etc.

What advice can you bless new, transitioning or frustrated kinky curly queens with? Learn your own hair! Advice is great, but your hair is not a duplicate of anyone else’s. So, when you hear ideas or techniques from others, it’s fine to try them out but pay attention to how your hair reacts and tweak those techniques as necessary. For example, most naturals hate using products with mineral oil. I, on the other hand, use them strategically. If I want a super shiny, popping twist out for an event, I’m using Pink Oil Moisturizer (which contains mineral oil) to seal my hair for the set. It never fails me. What I know, however, is that mineral oil causes build up and it causes it fast, so I don’t use it on a regular basis – just special occasions. Don’t feel limited by what everyone else is doing or not doing with their hair.

Also, have patience. You will not learn your natural hair texture overnight. You will have some bad hair days, so invest in some scarves, hats and other accessories to help you out when you’ve got to be somewhere and your hair is not cooperating.

Finally, don’t expect your hair to behave like it did when it was relaxed. One summer during my transition, I went to a wedding on the beach on a humid day. For some reason, I thought it was a good idea to straighten my hair. Needless to say, my hair looks like a crazy afro with straight ends in every picture. Lesson learned. Be realistic about your styling choices.

What natural experiments put the glam in your crown? Which ones ended up filed under Campaign EPIC FAIL? Using henna was an experiment that turned out beautifully! Once I get the process down, I found that henna treatments made my hair thicker, stronger and shinier.

The only epic fails I’ve had were when I was transitioning and had two textures in my head. There were so many times where my relaxed hair wouldn’t curl or my natural hair wouldn’t stay straight. Those were the toughest days, because you have to deal with people asking you what the heck is going on with your hair and why don’t you just stop playing around and relax it. I just ignored these kinds of comments and stuck to the plan.

What's the most fabulous part of your journey to frizzness? The most fabulous part of my journey is what I have learned about myself. My natural hair journey has taught me to question many things that I’ve been conditioned to believe. I’m learning to define what I want for myself and not conform to what everyone else may want for me. And being self-approved makes me feel more fabulous than any amount of approval that I could possibly get from the outside world.

Outside of your gorgeous mane, what inspires you? So many things inspire me! Inspiration is everywhere I look. I’m inspired by people who are super honest and raw with their feelings. I’m inspired by struggle, adversity and the resiliency of the human spirit. I’m energized by openminded, creative people. I’m inspired by love, kindness, my children, writing, dance, music, friendship, and spaces full of positive energy. Oh, and I’m inspired by good food and wine! Can’t forget that!

I'm elated we made it through the week....I hope yours was as awesome as mine!

So, this little blog isn't all about ME - it's all about the FRIZZNESS! If you want to celebrate your natural mane, serve up some inspiration to other apiring naturals or just plain rock your frizz, contact us today!
Send an email to ordered.steps@yahoo.com, and you can be featured right HERE! Let's come together in curly fellowship!

In other news:
The TV taping was FANTASTIC! My mane ended up in a mild curly puff adorned with the most outstanding purple flower I've ever worn, borrowed from Mom who refuses to let me have it, grrrr!!!!! Send up a prayer for me, ladies that I may become the owener of said fabulous hair trinket. Yep...it's THAT cute! My puff perked up upon meeting one of my favorite actors EVER IN LIFE Tom Hanks, who was the all around epitome of awesomeness! We also met Selena Gomez, the Disney talent who is incredibly gorgeous & has the honor of being Ms.-Attached-to-Justin-Beiber. Mmmm, hmmmm. She was a DOLL!

We danced outside the American Airlines Center, prior to set up for The Dallas Mavericks victory celebration! You guessed it (or maybe not) we also saw Shawn Marion. I told ya, it was a great day! This weekend's hair has been stretched a bit in a braidout w/my Shea Moisture Smoothie & Pantene Curly Gel. (Only a bit because I still had product in). It's going to have to make it's way into a puffy bun 'cause we're opening for 80's Funk Band Midnight Star in the 102 Texas Heat tomorrow, whew!!!! (I see BUCKETS of water in out future!) Don't know how my little frizzies will handle it all, but I think they're kinda soliders, so they may come out victorious! (Positive Reinforcement: that's on the top of my curly ingredient list!)

TV pics to come of the curlies in our ministry. Enjoy your weekend, loves - you deserve it!

Getting Down To Frizzness: Amber!

So, can I just I say I gasped & drooled when I saw of picture of this gorgeous curly's hair? She's such a beauty inside & out & it's my honor to interview her for The Frizzness! She's the fantastic Amber of Luvmykynxx & I promise, she'll make you swoon, too! (DISCLAIMER: grab a paper towel or kleenex for this one - it's totally drool inducing!)

How long have you been rocking your frizzness?
Since 1995 chemical free and May 2010 heat free. I wore my hair relaxed between age 15-21 and was raised naturally pressed with apl to bsl length hair all my life. Funny how I never got heat damage with petroleum based hair grease and a pressing comb now that I look back. =)

Did you desire a second date following your BC/End of transition, or did you make reservations for a party of ONE? I’ve never had the pleasure of BC’ing.

Natural Hair doesn't define who you are BUT.....
It speaks volumes about without you having to say a word.

What was the moment of epiphany in your journey?
A co-worker with 3 inch fro coming to work styl’d up daily, she represented to the fullest and I admired it, not just because it was fly but because it was real, it was authentic.

Because natural manes are so unpredictable, how do you combat feeling defeated on days when your crown seems less than stellar (based your OWN criteria)?
Based on my own criteria I’d say 2 a month maybe. I’m a simple chic…worst case scenario if I’m rushing and don’t have time to do style that will last for the week, I’ll rock a bun and it will be nice enough to avoid lookin’ a hot mess.

Do random people attempt to lay hands in your mane?
Not as much as I did when I first started wearing my hair out in natural styles, I used to keep it in a bun when I had it natural. I don’t get many random people, more people I know who know I’m cool and won’t go off on them =)

Do you find your mane becoming the grand topic of conversation? In some cases, but nothing negative, mostly asking if I will ever straighten my hair again for the most part.

CONFIDENCE CHECK: Has natural hair allowed you to dance as if no one is watching, or has your aurora remain unfazed since your relaxed days? LOL…these are some very well thought out and well phrased questions by the way. I feel like Im being interviewed by Barbara Walters or somebody. =) Being a slave to the flat iron and the look of straight hair is just as unfazed as relaxed hair is, at least for me. I ‘ve always taken great care of my hair even when I was pressing and flat ironing it. It kept a shine and was very healthy and in great condition…well on the external it was healthy but the heat damage showed when it was natural. I still can’t believe I have pics on FB with me wearing this huge afro for all friends to see…and the support is incredible. I honestly could care less about how anyone feels about the way wear my hair now.

Share some secrets leading to a fabulous, happy, HEALTHY mane...promise we WILL tell!Water is your ally. Following another person’s regimen may discourage you from forming a regimen based on your hairs needs especially if the products someone else is using don’t work for you. Learn your own hair and know it better than anyone else.

What was the WORST mistake you’ve made along the way?
Between 2003 and 2004, I got the urge after joining Napturality.com to wear my hair in its natural state and out of the bun , again, but I still wasn’t at the point where I am now , I accept and luv my shrinkage. I tried using curl activator gel by Worlds of Curls and S-Curl No Drip moisturizing spray in hopes of reducing shrinkage, defining my curls, and keeping it moist…can you say follow the drip?! SMH…that’s why I’m so happy we finally have hair products to help accentuate our beautiful hair and bring out its beauty.

What advice can you bless new, transitioning or frustrated kinky curly queens with?Take the time to learn your hair. Wearing your hair naturally takes effort to maintain and isn’t for a lazy person, I have to keep it real. I put time and effort to get the results I get and I’m sure every Naturalista can attest to it. There will be times when you know your head is screamin’ for attention and all you wanna do is chill. That’s when you hop online and type natural hair inspiration and re-focus, or better yet visit my blog http://luvmykynxx.blogspot.com I aim to inspire as well.

What natural experiments put the glam in your crown? Which ones ended up filed under Campaign EPIC FAIL?I don’t experiment with products but I will experiment with styles. I tried a fro hawk, it was not the business on me. On the other hand I have come to perfect a flat twist at any length of hair so I’m proud of that accomplishment, =)

What's the most fabulous part of your journey to frizzness?
The fact that I’m even on it.

Outside of your gorgeous mane, what inspires you?
Everyone I see natural inspires me, especially children with healthy hair.

You Try To Plan Ahead....

Good afternoon, Buttercups!

I've been singing me a song today, wanna hear it? Hear it goes (in alto): Whomp, whomp! Whomp, whomp, whomp. BIG, WHOMP.

So, which you want first? The good news or the dufserior news? (DUFSERIOR = dufus + superior/supreme-EPIC -FAIL). Well, since I love serving heaping helpings of positivity, we'll start with the GOOD.

Today, I am totally loving on my mane. I'm whippin', & rolling it & what-not. Mmm, hmmm. My frizzies are loving back on me w/shine & doe eyed pride...yet still flicking a tad of the dreaded side eye in my general direction. Because....
I broke my own curly rule #2: Never experiment with your crown prior to important engagements. Yep. Which brings me to the OTHER news:

Remember the achieve supreme-puffness master plan I mapped out for you guys yesterday? Well SOMEBODY got the bright idea to add one tiny thing into the mix that crapshot my puff's entire indentity (for time being, of course). See, I'm new to the Land of Denman, and decided to use the brush to de-frizz my coils just a bit before twisting. (My original tool was identified as my hands). It seems my hair simply adores the combination of water, Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie, castor oil, (Denman glide through) finished off with Pantene Curly Spray Gel. (In that order - not too heavy on the castor oil, my loves). I installed medium twists, waking up this morning to an awesomely defined, bouncy, coily non-fro. I love it....save for the fact it's the total OPPOSITE of what I was going for.

Arrrggghhh.

So, lesson learned? If you want to be a powerpuff girl, you may not want to DEFINE your curls first unless you just have so much hair people mistake your mane for Tracee Ellis Ross' on the regular. (My hair, with its fine self, comes nowhere close.)

And remember to stick to the plan. I'm just lucky that even w/a little deviating, my coils have brought me great joy today. Tomorrow's television appearance will introduce a tamed set of springy coils to Texas. Cause a sista is not touching this noggin again until we are through dancing!

Thank you guys for being a blessing on our page! One day, I'll figure out how to respond to comments; I'm so not rude. Just techno-anemic.

Nobody can love your Frizz like you,
natural dancer

(ps - What was Curly Rule #1? Have FUN w/your hair! I know I am!)

Dancin' W/My FRIZZ!

So last week, our dance company got some news so exiting, it straightened the frizz out of my coils!

On Wednesday, Ordered Steps Productions will dance LIVE during "Good Morning Texas" on our local ABC affiliate! What an awesome opportunity to minister to the masses through dance AND rock our frizz at the same time! (By golly most of us are either au naturale or transtioning, so it's a fabulous sight to see!)

Now, onto some VERY IMPORTANT business in this matter: What's curly to do to prep for such a time as this? Hmmm. First major TELEVISED appearance since going natural. If there's a single gram of wisdom permanently tatooed in the maitenance corridor of my brain since starting my journey - if your beloved mane is sometimes full of attitude & drama (like mine) it's so not cool to experement before a big event! I mean, Frizzy Time Out is definitely not an option at that point. Unless of course you can spin a mean cornrow, protective style or wig. None of which have been blessed by my little hands. Naturally.

Since everything's bigger in Texas, I believe my starting point will be somewhere in the town of GINORMOUS. The bigger the better. So today, I'll prep my little frizzies for a beautimous puff. (I want it BIGGER than this photo of last week's mini-puff; Mr. CameraMan will have to practice his bob & weave skills so my puff doesn't knowck is camera down, lol!)

Products:
Spritz of H20
Shea Moisture Curl Enahancing Smoothie (the stuff fluffy puffs are birthed from)
Castor Oil
Pantene Curly Spray Gel
*this combo should hit the target point

Tools
My Hands
Goody Elastic Band (cut open to wrap/secure)

I'm going to twist the products into my crown tonite (keeping my edges covered overnite to keep from gelling) & let it fly free tomorrow. By Wednesday morning, it should be shiny, puffy, Footloose & fancy free!!!!
(If you haven't seen the movie "Footloose" you are so missing out!) Speaking of the 80's....

We are also opening for 80's funk band Midnight Star at the Best Southwest Juneteenth Celebration - OUTDOORS. And Mr. Weatherman declared 100 degree temps. I'm thinking twists may do to keep my curls cool, calm & frizzless.

OSP - representing for Chirst AND Curlies!

I'll post pics after the events....so excited & JUST CAN'T HIDE IT!

There's 2 sides to every Frizz,

The Biz Frizz: Natural Hair Wear!

If it's true that curly girls rock, then we are pleased to introduce one of the natural industry's HOTTEST sources - Natural Hair Wear! Guys, owner Kelley Saxon is Frizzness personified, & took time out to chat with us about her line of outstanding accessories to help rock your frizz! (Ps - there are so many wonderful photos she shared with us, you just KNOW there's gonna be a take two, right?) Be blessed by this beautiful entrepreneur & support Natural Hair Wear!

We're excited to have you Get Down To Frizzness with us! Tell us your name & about your business:Hello my name is Kelley Saxon and I am the owner of Natural Hair Wear. We specialize in natural hair apparel for women, men and children. We recently added jewelry and accessories to our business. We also design shirts for businesses, meet up groups, special events etc.

What inspired you to get down to frizzness & birth your own company?Ok well let me tell you how it all started… I officially started my natural hair journey in 2008. Prior to going natural, I found myself experiencing dizziness and severe headaches (mainly after my salon visits for perm retouches). I wanted to get to the bottom of why I was experiencing these dizzy spells. Well after doctor visits and a $600 cat scan that did not reveal any health issues (in which I am thankful) I figured it was the lye from the perms. So needless to say I decided to stop "lyeing"!
I have enjoyed every second of my natural hair journey. I have worn braids natural twists, an afro, and last but not least Sisterlocks. I have been locked since March 2009.
One of the things that I really wanted to do was to embrace and promote wearing natural hair. I wanted to display on the outside what I was feeling on the inside. What better way to say it loud than through our everyday dress and hence the birth of naturalhairwear.com. I love jewelry and accessories and I decided to add some jewelry to my face book page to see what the response would be and it has been wonderful. Not only are people buying our shirts they are also getting the tools to accessorize for an even more complete (fierce) look. Currently because we have thousands of pieces and the items change daily we are just offering the accessories via our face book page.

Who is your target consumer? Our target customer is anyone who is interested in our products! We have the shirts for the naturals but have found that non natural family members buy for their love ones who are natural. The same goes for our accessories in which the majority is tailored for females but I have brothers buying pieces for their sisters as gifts. We also have wholesale opportunities.

Are you rocking your natural crown or have you put your whirl of coils/curls in time-out? I am rocking my natural crown which is locks!

"Am I My Curlie's Keeper?" - How has the natural community supported you? I can not even explain how much the natural hair community has supported! The natural hair community is the back bone to our business. We have people who buy from us, refer people they know to us, do face book posting about us , blog about us, you tube videos about us and so forth.. We have naturals constantly praying for our success.

What makes yours stand out from other companies positioned to patronize curly beauties? Our apparel makes everyone love their natural. We stand out from other companies because we have something for everyone.

What transcends your company to total awesomeness? The totally awesome thing about our company is that we create our own designs and use quality tees. We also are on the front lines of the business where we get to interact one on one with our customers. I personally answer the calls and emails.

What's your hottest product that will make a dollar slap a curl? I think the hottest products that we have would be the naturally fierce shirt and the hair accessories.

What's new on the horizon for you? We are currently working on new designs that we think will definitely be a winner for those naturals who are looking to wear their natural in style.

As a business owner & fellow natural, how can we successfully derail the Product Junkie Train - yet still show you some monetary love? Lol, I would say to try out one of our shirts or accessories and then every pay period add another piece to the collection rather than buying all at once.

Today's fashionistas love being fruitfully frugal....what are five must haves in your line that won't make our wallets weep? The unique thing about this is that all of our products were priced in mind with remaining affordable. The cool thing about it is that all of our shirts with the exception of some plus sized are under $20.00. For the accessories the same thing you can really get a bang for your buck.

Where can we find you on the web & purchase products? Please visit our website www.naturalhairwear.com we have items in the shop and preorder areas. You can friend us on face book to view our albums we are Natural Hair Wear. These are some of the links here https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.183075591743931.66499.100001244751976&l=112c2093cf

What would you love to say to The Frizzness community? There is strength in numbers and the word of mouth so read about us, purchase from us, blog about us refer a friend to us. We thank you for the love and support and thank you the frizzness for the opportunity. Natural Hair Rocks!

Thank you for taking the time to share with us; we pray blessings upon your company!!!

Getting Down To Frizzness: Ingrea!

Tell us about you: My name is Ingrea, and I’m a mother, model, singer/songwriter, host, and actress.

How long have you been rocking your frizzness?
I’ve gone back and forth between having my hair relaxed and natural several times, but I’ve been rocking my frizzness continuously for 5 years.

Did you desire a second date following your BC/End of transition, or did you make reservations for a party of ONE?
It was a party of one.

Natural Hair doesn't define who you are BUT.....it shows that I accept me for who I am and what I look like.

What was the moment of epiphany in your journey?
I can’t remember a specific moment, but I remember feeling so free after the last time I decided to get my relaxed hair cut off. I didn’t have to worry about if my hair got wet or having to gel it down and tie it down to keep it straight. All the hassles were over.

Because natural manes are so unpredictable, how do you combat feeling defeated on days when your crown seems less than stellar (based your OWN criteria)? My hair does have it days. And when it does I simply put it in a puff or put a hat on.

Do random people attempt to lay hands in your mane?
No, not too many. I’ve had hairstylists do some interesting things to my hair for photoshoots, but that’s about as random as it’s gotten.

Do you find your mane becoming the grand topic of conversation?
Sometimes my hair does get a lot of attention. It’s usually people with straight hair who ask me a lot of questions.

CONFIDENCE CHECK: Has natural hair allowed you to dance as if no one is watching, or has your aurora remain unfazed since your relaxed days?
I don’t do too much dancing until I sweat, but anytime it has happened I’ve had no worries about my hair.

Share some secrets leading to a fabulous, happy, HEALTHY mane...promise we WILL tell!
Drink plenty of water and eat fruits and vegetables. Diet plays a big role in the health of our hair. Use products that will moisturize and that are curly/frizzy-friendly. Low/no shampoo and conditioner washing are also great for naturally curly hair.

What was the WORST mistake you’ve made along the way?
The worst mistake I made was getting a straightening product put on the ends of my hair. It made them very coarse and tangled.

What advice can you bless new, transitioning or frustrated kinky curly queens with?
Be patient with your new head of hair. It takes some getting used to and you have to learn how to care for your hair in a different way from how you would care for relaxed hair. Try different products and have fun doing it. You’ll get to know a lot about your hair along the way. There are many websites that offer tips on styles, products, and even how to do deal with different stages of going natural.

What natural experiments put the glam in your crown? Which ones ended up filed under Campaign EPIC FAIL?
I love doing a baking soda or apple cider vinegar rinse and using a good deep conditioner. My hair feels really soft afterward. I haven’t had too many failed experiments, but I have had a few products I wouldn’t try again.

What's the most fabulous part of your journey to frizzness?
Instead of giving up and getting a relaxer like I’ve done in the past when my natural hair has grown out I stuck with it and learned how to take care of it. I did my research online as I advised other curly queens to do.

Outside of your gorgeous mane, what inspires you? Great music of any kind

You Think You're So Slick, Don't You?!

It hasn't always been this way.
Inquisitive side-eyes from onlooking seasoned naturalistas & newbies, getting just a hint of nausea from checking out the waves riding the top of my noggin. Edges straighter than when my relaxers beat 'em mercilessly into submission.

"What'd you do to get your edges so slick, sis?"

Batting my eyelashes lovingly toward my puff, comes my simple reply: "V05 Strawberries & Cream Conditioner, Fantasia IC Gel (w/Sparkle Lites of course) & H20."

That's it.

Sometimes, I sorta dig a tamed front so I can wild the back out in all my naturalness. This combo subdues my stubborn coils like a charm every time!

NEW EXPERIMENT: Olive Oil Edge Control. Jury's still out to see whether it's tough enough to rock out w/my personal frizz. Looking & wearing great for daily practivity. (I think I made that word up, but I like the way it sounds, ha!) But when I DANCE...I think my frizzies bullies it like that evil little kid Farkus in "A Christmas Story." (My FAVORITE Christmas flick EV-VERRR!!!! Yet, I digress).

Day #4 & my faux-n-go is still working, woo hoo! I spritzed & twisted w/S-Curl Moisturizing Activator & a dab of Pantene Curly Spray Gel. My hair is soft, bouncy & full of vigor! I think my coils heart glycerine & I'm loving this comobo!

Now I'm off to check the legitimacy of the word "practivity." Say it 10 times fast, it'll become a song!

There's two sides to every Frizz,

natural dancer

Getting Down To Frizzness: Lyndsey!

How long have you been rocking your frizzness? I’ve been rocking the natural look since August 2008.

Did you desire a second date following your BC/End of transition, or did you make reservations for a party of ONE? Solo reservation here.

Natural Hair doesn't define who you are BUT.....I believe it’s a big part of who I am and makes the statement that I define my own terms of beauty and refuse to live by the normal standards of what is socially acceptable.

What was the moment of epiphany in your journey? When I threw out my own curling irons, straightening chemicals, hair rollers, etc., I thought ‘wow; I really don’t need to go through the agony of this anymore!’ lol

Because natural manes are so unpredictable, how do you combat feeling defeated on days when your crown seems less than stellar (based your OWN criteria)? I throw on a headwrap or cap.

Do random people attempt to lay hands in your mane? No, I don’t get that too often.

Do you find your mane becoming the grand topic of conversation? Randomly, when someone comes up and asks how long I’ve been natural and they want tips on how to ‘cross over’.

CONFIDENCE CHECK: Has natural hair allowed you to dance as if no one is watching, or has your aurora remain unfazed since your relaxed days? I definitely feel bolder and uninhibited since I’ve had natural hair…but it grew on me; I had to get past worrying about how it’d turn out and what people would think.

Share some secrets leading to a fabulous, happy, HEALTHY mane...promise we WILL tell! I get my roots tightened every 2-3 months and try to keep my locks clean between that time. I spray water on my scalp often (between washes) and, for shine and to prevent dryness, I use a light pomade called Max Green Alchemy, which has jojoba oil and other plant nutrients that are supposed to be good for your mane.

What was the WORST mistake you’ve made along the way? Starting my locks with gel….very messy, ugh. Now, I go to a loctician that uses a more natural, holistic approach w/ no gel or wax. It’s called Nzuri locking (basically, like crocheting)

What advice can you bless new, transitioning or frustrated kinky curly queens with? Just go with the flow and let your hair take you where it wants to go.

What natural experiments put the glam in your crown? Which ones ended up filed under Campaign EPIC FAIL? I used to use this tea tree oil b/c it had the best aroma, but later found out it was way too heavy on my scalp; the residue literally came out in clunks when I washed my hair.

What's the most fabulous part of your journey to frizzness? I love waking up everyday and not having to estimate how long it’s going to take to style my hair…just spray water or dab a little oil on it and go.

Outside of your gorgeous mane, what inspires you? Family, friends, writing, writing and more writing.

How can our beautiful readers find you on the web? Catch me on Facebook (Lyndsey Ellis), Skype (lyndsey.ellis3), LinkedIn, or follow me on Twitter (lyellis). Also, you can check out some of my work appearing in Synchronized Chaos and Indigest webzines, Examiner.com, AND magazine, Western Addition Community Newspapers, and Napa Valley News Online. Many thanks & blessings for getting down to frizzness!
